Backward Assignment Design

This is an assignment sample extracted from Precalculus Chapter Polynomial Functions three sections. There are assignment sheets in pdf format containing the details about the instruction that students need to complete the assignment. I also add the marks for each criterion that is used to measure students’ achievement. I use point grade system for grading the assignment. The total possible points are 25 pts, and it will be converted to percent to reveal about students’ learning performance lately.

On the assignment, there are three problems designed for assessing students’ learning outcomes. Since the goal of the assignment is to assess if students are able to graph polynomial in complex number system by using given information. To reach the goal, several objectives must be accomplished. For example, regarding graphing quadratic function, students must know, firstly, how to find vertex, intercepts, opening, symmetry of a quadratic function in both general and standard form, and also be able to use graphing calculator to analyze behavior of the quadratic function, finally, to describe it on the complex plane. Considering their difficulty in directly working on the graphing problem, I design multiple questions, i.e., for the problem 1. Students need to show the skills of calculating vertex and intercepts either from plugging the given values into vertex formula or establishing an equation to find the roots of the equation in order to find the intercepts under the complex system. Students have practical experience from the problem set when they need to understand the concept of roots in complex number system and when to ask to establish an equation to find roots, and then find the intercepts of the quadratic function.
